Leaving from and arriving at: Bolzano

Day 1: Participants arrive and settle into a hotel in Bolzano previously booked for you by Oiden Tour. The city is also known as “The gateway to the Dolomites” (see: How to get here). Free time could be spent checking out Bolzano, which has plenty to offer.

Day 2: Meet with tour conductor at hotel. Leave from Bolzano, a short journey to Merano. A guided tour will help you discover the secrets of this city which has a long tradition of tourism and is often visited by the international high society. The lush botanical gardens of the Trautmansdorff Castle show us what the mild climate of the Adige Valley can do. Afternoon in the hotel.

Day 3: Climb up the vast, green Venosta Valley scattered with apple orchards and after having visited the old irrigation canals, the “Quairwaal”, it’s off to the Coira Castle, home of the Trapp counts, which contains valuable furniture and a vast collection of armour. In the vicinity of Glorenza, in a superbly preserved medieval “city” surrounded by a wall, we will take time to have lunch. In approximately 30 minutes we will be on the Resia lake, a vast reservoir, with a stupendous view of Ortles, where you can see the bell tower of the church of Curon rising above the surface of the water which tells us of how the town came to be flooded whilst a hydroelectric system was being built. Return to the hotel.

Day 4: Leave for the Senales Valley. Following a relaxing two hour walk around the Lake Vernago we will stop to have lunch at the “Finneilhof” farm house. In the afternoon we will be on the trail of man of Ötzi, the mummy dating back circa 5,300 years and found perfectly preserved on the Similaun glacier. The Acheo Parc of Madonna of Senales tells us his story. Before going back to the hotel, the Castel Rametz wine museum invites us to stop taste some of its wines.

Day 5: The morning will be dedicated to visiting the famous Tirolo Castle, home of the historical and cultural museum of the Province of Bolzano, and to the nearby birdlife recovery center. Lunch will be at the “Schloss Tirol” hotel. In the afternoon, the doors of the Fragsburg Castle, situated near a waterfall, will be opened. Back to the hotel in Bolzano.

Day 6: The Renon plateau is like a sunny terrace which, for centuries, has welcomed visitors from the nearby city for the weekend or for a vacation. We can in fact admire some of the villas owned by well known families of Bolzano. A rapid cable car, recently opened, will take us up 1,200 metres in just 12 minutes and then a small 1920s train will take us to Collalbo. Our programme consists of an easy excursion, with the use of a cable car, to the Corno of Renon, the highest point of the plateau where there is a wonderful view of the Catinaccio and the Sella range. After a stop at an inn, we can admire the “Pyramids of Soil”, a rare and unique geological phenomenon caused by the corrosion of the rain over millions of years. Return to Bolzano. Some free time.

Day 7: We move to the Dolomite area for an excursion on the Siusi Alps where the green fields and woods meet the majestic rocky peaks. The excursion to the “Panche delle Streghe” offer beautiful views and tell us of the old legends linked to the nearby Presule Castle. Lunch at the Bullaccia shelter. In the afternoon, we can relax in Ortisei, the most important center of the Gardena Valley, renowned in the whole of Europe for it wood craftsmanship. Back to hotel in Bolzano.

Day 8: We leave Bolzano to take a look at Lake Carezza and continue our journey to Malga Ciapela where we will take a cable car up to the magnificent Marmolada glacier (3,260 m) with its immense stretches of snow, a place recognised as a natural heritage for humanity by UNESCO. From there we will go to Punta Serauta or Punta Rocca for lunch before returning to Malga Ciapela. In the afternoon, we will take a short walk in Serraidi of Sottoguda and then off to Alta Val Badia passing through the Falzarego and Valparola passes (2,192 m)

Day 9: Today we remain at a high altitude and briefly stop at the idyllic Lake Misurina then moving on to the Auronzo Hut (2,320 m). The view of the Three Peaks of Lavaredo will leave you breathless. A two hour walk will help us admire them from different prospectives. After this breath taking experience, a walk through the elegant streets of Cortina d’Ampezzo is just what you need. We are in the heart of the Dolomite of Veneto, the center point of winter tourism. A discreet and refined place where famous people from around the world have been attracted to since the beginning of the 19th century. In the evening, back to the Badia Valley.

Day 10: In the morning, an easy walk from Gardena Pass (2,121 m) to Colfosco where you have an ample view of the Sella range and the Via Ferrate of the “Tridentina”. We go on to Pusteria Valley. We will have lunch in a restaurant that offers traditional South Tyrolean dishes in a pleasant atmosphere. In the afternoon, a little history and culture… The open air ethnographic museum of Teodone tells us a lot about the culture and everyday life on a farm at high altitudes. Back to the Badia Valley in the late afternoon.

Day 11: The last stage in this varied journey in the heart of the Dolomites takes us to Vipiteno in the Isarco Valley . With its typically northern characteristics, this small city is well worth a visit. The 1460 Palazzo del Municipio (Town Hall) and the church of Santo Spirito (Holy Spirit) are just some of the architectural beauties. We have time to see the Cascate di Stanghe (Stanghe waterfalls), not far from the city before stopping at the Miniere di Ridanna museum for lunch where a guided visit of the bowls of the earth will follow in a comfortable train. A unique and special experience. Our journey ends in Bolzano.
